1770-76 French Infantry Musket (706)
The French redesigned their locks in the 1770’s. The lock plates are now rounded on the tail section and have a rounded bottom steel pan. The cock also has a round face with a curved tail on the frizzen in 1770-73 models and a straight tailed frizzen on the 1774-76 models. The breeches of the barrels were beefed up a little and the butt stock was reshaped. Furniture is very similar to the 1766 musket. In 1774, they went to a shorter trigger guard with a short nose and added a bayonet retaining spring projecting out of the end of the fore stock. Also in 1774 the middle band has a lower lip on the bottom edge and a ramrod retaining spring inside the rear band which is retained by a screw. The trumpet headed ramrod became standard in 1774. It has a 44 3/4" round barrel, available in .69 caliber. The lock plate measures 6 5/16" x 1 5/16". The front bands did not have a front sight on them in the 1770-1771 production. The separate 2 piece trigger guard and bow started appearing on the later production of these muskets.
