1839 Percussion Musket (860)

It was decided in 1838 that in the Tower there was an abundance of parts that could be used to save money over producing the completely new 1838 weapon. Hence forth the 1839 was born. The earliest production used lock plates converted from flintlock, but by the mid 1840’s new lock plates were being made. The square on the tumbler for the hammer was discontinued on these locks. The tumbler shaft was left round and the hammer was positioned with a pin to lock the hammer in the correct position. You will find these with a variety of markings up to 1850. They were still being produced even after the 1842 came into being. The barrel is 39" in .75 caliber. The 1839 did not have a rear sight and pins were used instead of keys. The model 1839 was also produced in a Sea Service version with a 30 1/4" barrel.
