In 1755, the people of New York City were afraid that the French were going to attack at any time (French and Indian War) so they contracted for 1,000 muskets for use by the city inhabitants. These guns were branded and marked "NY" with the regiment number. Paul Ackerman of West Point Museum was instrumental in this project making sure all the patterns and engraving were perfect duplicates of the original. This weapon was originally a Long Land, which was shortened to the Short Land configuration at some point after it was made. This gun is reproduced exactly as it is in the Museum at West Point. The butt plate and trigger guard are quite different than a standard first model. The lock is simply marked. "Wilson". It has a late front thimble for an iron ramrod. These New York muskets were carried in General James Abercrombie’s assault on the French Fort Carillion at Ticonderoga, they also were carried by the New York Regiments that attacked Montreal. The lock plate measures 6 7/8" x 1 1/8". The throw of the cock is 1 15/16".
