This was the first official standard French Infantry Musket. The lock has the vertical frizzen bridle. The original musket is in George Neumann’s Collection. The bores on French Muskets were set a minimum of .69 caliber and a maximum of .73 caliber. All of the French Muskets that we have measured were .72 caliber. This actually was not a new weapon, but an official recognition of a design already in use. Our lock is of the earliest form of the 1717 style. Lock markings on our plate is "IFC", which is Jean Fournier who worked at Charleville from 1716 to 1733. There are a few surviving brass mounted examples of the 1717 and 1728 that were made for the French Navy which use a different butt plate that we now have available. The barrel is a 46 3/4", octagon to round, available in .69 or .72 caliber. The octagon section of the barrel is about 5" to 7" fading into the round. The lock plate measures 6 1/2" x 1 1/4". The throw of the cock is 1 7/8".
