The French were modernizing their armed forces at this time and decided they needed rifles to keep up with the other world powers. They designed a Cavalry Carbine with a 16" barrel and an Infantry Rifle with a 25 1/2" barrel. Both were .54 caliber rifled with tapered and flared octagon barrels to cut down on the weight. These were copied from originals in the Bryan Troop and Pierre Cayla Collection. The 1793 Infantry Rifle has superb balance and would make a fantastic hunting rifle. The lock plate measures 5 1/2" x 1". The throw of the cock is 1 5/8".
